Teiichi Igarashi, from Sanjo City in Niigata, was a legend who climbed Mt. Fuji at the age of 101 years and 10 months. He first set foot on the mountain when he was 73, and from the age of 89, he climbed it 13 years in a row. His determination and spirit touched the hearts of many and set a record that seemed unbreakable.
But on August 5, 2024, Yukikichi Akuzawa of Maebashi City, Gunma, reached the summit at 102 years and 51 days, rewriting history after 37 years. He pushed through the steep ascent to the 8th station and the grueling final stretch to the peak, proving that age is no barrier to human willpower.
On August 16, he received his Guinness World Records certificate as the oldest man to climb Mt. Fuji. Smiling, he said, “I’m satisfied. I could climb only thanks to everyone around me.”
What an extraordinary achievement — congratulations, Mr. Akuzawa!
Mt. Fuji is an active volcano in Japan, with an elevation of 3,775.56 meters.
